SmartWhale's Principal, Jake Whalen, has been involved in economic development, international affairs and public policy research and development for much of his career. He has undertaken sector studies in aerospace and defence, information technology, biotechnology, ports and manufacturing, and he has provided competitive intelligence on several geographic markets, including the United States, Europe and Asia.

Jake has completed research and project management assignments for numerous public sector clients, including the Canadian departments of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Public Works and Government Services, and Environment, as well as the Province of Nova Scotia. He has also advised regional economic development authorities in Atlantic Canada.

In 2005, Jake was based in Hanoi, Vietnam, where he worked with senior members of the Vietnamese Government to attract greater foreign investment into the country, as part of a legal reform initiative sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency.

Before establishing SmartWhale Consulting, he managed research services at the Greater Halifax Partnership, a Canadian economic development agency highly regarded for its business retention and expansion program, SmartBusiness.

He has degrees from Queen's University and Saint Mary's University, and a Diploma in International Trade from the Forum for International Trade Training.

Jake's diverse background reflects a broad interest in providing the research-based findings companies, sector associations and governments need to drive smart and sustainable growth at home and abroad.
